Interview Reflection
The interviews were incredibly illuminating. I came to realize that my interviewees were completely knowledgeable of the struggles many college students go through when choosing a potential field. The interviewees were neither shocked nor confounded by the number of undecided students. Their knowledge far exceeded that of mine. While at Emory, I spoke to many a individuals that seemed positive of what they wanted to do in life. Thus, I was under the impression that the number of undecided students was not as high as I previously thought. After going through research I found that my impression was far from the truth.
The differing views of future job availability also interested me. Chris and Cerise seemed somewhat worried about their job availability while Hong was tremendously confident in job availability in his field. This fact then presented a question. Do students decide because of the security of certain jobs? Do many students chose to be undecided because they do not know if they want to follow their dreams or have pretty secure employment? In Hong's case, Job security played a part in him choosing to go the business route. Chris and Cerise, on the other hand, clearly display desires to follow their dreams of having a job that they will enjoy day in and day out but approach the decision with trepidation. They fear that "following their dreams" could leave them unsuccessful.
After interviewing Chris, Hong, and Cerise, I too realized the reasoning behind my indecisiveness. Like Chris, I worry of the work load that comes with pre-med. However, the job security, if one completes it, is very high. Thus, this option is very attractive to me.
