Hong's Interview
As Hong and I sit in my dorm room, I commence the interview. I was curious to know how Hong decided his major. I was interested to know how one could be so positive. He smiles and tells me that he believes that Business is his calling. Thus, he is working to get into Emory University’s prestigious Business School.
Hong excitedly emphasized that he is an advocate for small businesses. I had no idea where this passion came from until he told me about his parents. Hong’s parents are successful owners of a thriving doughnut shop in Oklahoma City, OK. Hong witnessed firsthand the fruits of his parents’ labor. He emotionally explained that the shop came from humble beginnings but progressed to one of the most renowned doughnut shops in Oklahoma City. Hong said that his parents’ were the biggest influence in him deciding to major in business. Because of the business major’s prevalence, I was wondered if Hong was worried about the job availability in his field. Hong looked at me with a confident smile and said, “No.” Hong elaborated that Emory University’s Business School is among the best in the nation. He said that the Business School actually sets their students up with jobs before they graduate. Therefore, he said that not getting a job is the least of worries. |
Hong seemed quite passionate towards business. Thus, I assume that he has an intense passion towards business. He adds that he does have a passion towards business but his primary motivation in a job is money. He even goes on to jokingly say that having a job that he hates but pays well is “a sacrifice he is willing to make.”
Throughout the interview Hong seemed confident and sure of what he wanted to do with his life. Doubt never once crept on his face. I was quite shocked when he said that the number of undecided college students never once surprised him and that he too was undecided earlier in the semester. He was not positive what path he wished to take. Music sparked his interest but the worry of job availability was constantly in the back of his mind. Hong goes on to disclose that business is not only a field that intrigues him but it is also quite a safe route. |
